OUR PHILOSOPHY

Welcome to First Grade! We are very excited to make this a positive, fun and educational year for your child. A typical day in first grade consists of Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. It may also include Art, Music, Library, Technology and Physical Education. Our curriculum has an emphasis on building reading and writing skills and strategies with the New York Reading and Writing Project. Wherever possible we attempt to use a thematic approach to integrate the skills in these areas.  Curriculum content is guided by the Common Core State Standards and our district benchmarks for each subject area.

Important Reminders...

  • First Grade desires to be NUT FREE!  Please do not send any nut products to school for snack or lunch.
  • Please send your child with a healthy snack each day!  The days are longer and students need a snack to stay focused on learning!
  • Snacks, lunches, water bottles, backpacks and all belongings should be marked with your child's name.
  • All snacks and drinks should be in a ziploc or plastic container, absolutely no glass!
  • Please be sure your child wears appropriate clothing and shoes for recess and especially PE.

What we are Learning this Semester

Academics:

Math - We are exploring numbers- reading, writing, counting, adding, subtracting and solving word problems.  Students will be practicing fluency of addition and subtraction facts to 7 (and beyond). Students will be using number bonds and using labeled math drawings to show their mathematical thinking.

Reading - Students will learn how Readers Build Good Habits.  Some of the readers good habits include: taking a sneak peek at the beginning of the story, they reread to smooth out their voice, they look at all parts of the word, try out a word two ways (short vowel & long vowel), never give up, and readers do something at the end (share their favorite part of the story; retell- beginning, middle, end; tell someone if he/she would recommend the book (why or why not) and more!  You can help your student at home by practicing sounding out words (look at all of the parts of the word and trying it two ways), rereading the story with a smooth voice (not sound like a robot- choppy), and doing something at the end of each story: such as retelling the story elements: characters, setting, problem and solution(s).

Writing - We are focusing on Small Moments (personal narrative writing).  Students will learn how to identify and write about ONE event in his/her life and write about it.  Examples of small moment stories: their field trip in kindergarten to the zoo; his/her 5th birthday party; his/her first day of first grade; when he/she earned a trophy from his/her soccer team.

Science - In our own classrooms and with Mrs. Yee in the Science Lab, students will learn about our 5 senses and space! Students will observe patterns of the moon (Moon Phases), moon facts, sun facts, eclipses, solstices, seasons and beyond!

Social Studies-  Students will be learning about map skills!  Students will learn about their city, state, country and continent.  Students will also learn the seven continents and four oceans around the world, how to use a legend and read a map.

Field Trip Update -  We will be doing a walking field trip around our Quail Run Community as students put their map skills into practice!  Stay tuned in for volunteer updates and permission slip information from your child’s first grade teacher!
